How do i upgrade to a Verizon Smart Phone/PDA without having to get the data plan?

i have a normal phone, if i upgrade to a phone like moto q music do i have to get a data plan with it or can i keep my plan? and if i did will they let me just cancel it and change to a normal plan after like a month like with other companies?
