A question for my fellow Christians?

It saddens me tremendously when people on here say they were attacked or harred or repeatedly sent rude emails by someone claiming to be a Christian. Do people really feel that that is an effective way of being a witness? Is telling people they are going to hell really going to change anyone's mind? I realize Christians get a tremendous amount of criticism on here, but wouldn't the best response be to turn the other cheek and share the truth in love?
